Assistant Curator, Modern Art

LACMA is seeking an Assistant Curator for its Modern Art Department. Under the supervision of the Department Head, the Assistant Curator will support curatorial work including acquisitions, exhibitions, publications, collections management, and donor cultivation. This position requires the ability to work in a collaborative and encyclopedic museum. The Assistant Curator works independently and collaboratively with various members of the Museum. The Assistant Curator will work primarily on campus, and as needed at various sites for donor cultivation as well as gallery and museum exhibitions.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Participates in quarterly acquisitions meetings by preparing write ups and presenting acquisitions.
- Prepares content for Collections Online.
- Negotiates with artists, dealers and/or donors regarding potential acquisitions as directed by the Department Head.
- Assists department Curatorial Administrator to maintain collection files current, paper and electronic.
- Proposes, develops, and executes all aspects of small-scale permanent collection rotations including but not limited to research, topic determination, object selection, developing layout, didactics, and overseeing installation.
- Supports large scale exhibition projects under the guidance of Senior Curatorial staff including confirming display details, participating in exhibition installation and others.
- Participates in docent and security training and staff walkthroughs.
- Proposes, develops concepts and serves as author or co-author of museum publications, and contributes entries and back matter for catalogs.
- Works with Conservation and Collections Management to ensure the preservation of the collection.
- Serves as mentor to junior and peer staff, interns, as well as Curatorial Fellows.
- Works collaboratively to cultivate new donors, steward existing donors and supports fund-raising from individuals, and foundations for acquisitions or exhibitions.
- Participates in Modern and Contemporary Art Council (MCAC) and other departmental donor/supporter events
- Performs other duties or special projects as assigned
WORK REQUIREMENTS
- Master’s degree in Western art history or other relevant field, with emphasis on art 1900-1960s; PhD preferred.
- Minimum 2-3 years of curatorial experience working in a museum.
- Proficiency with relevant foreign languages.
