Elizabeth D. Smith specializes in art, craft, and material culture of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. She is currently a Ph.D. candidate in the History of Art & Architecture Department at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Her research is supported by the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Luce/ACLS Dissertation Fellowship in American Art, and the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts (CASVA) at the National Gallery of Art.
Elizabeth has worked at numerous museums across the country, including the Speed Art Museum in Kentucky, the Bruce Museum in Connecticut, and the Smithsonian’s Renwick Gallery in DC. At the Bruce, she curated exhibitions from the permanent collection, drawing attention to overlooked themes and artists across the museum’s twentieth-century holdings, and revitalized their evening lecture series. Most recently, she authored labels and didactics for Prospect New Orleans (Prospect.6).
Originally from Kentucky, Elizabeth earned her BA and MA from the Hite Art Institute at the University of Louisville.
